Shanghai International Studies University (SISU)



    Upholding the motto of “Integrity, Vision and Academic Excellence”,Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) is an internationally recognized, prestigious academic institution distinctive for its multidisciplinary and multicultural nature, committed to preparing innovative professionals and future global leaders for a wide range of international expertise to address the critical challenges of our times.

    Having established and maintained a high academic stature among universities of its kind, SISU has been funded to offer 10 national featured specialties and 6 Shanghai leading disciplines, adding to the existing 3 national key disciplines and a national undergraduate education platform for European languages.

    Currently, SISU offer courses in 42 languages, including 34 modern languages (English, Russian, French, German, Spanish, Arabic, Japanese, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Korean, Persian, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Swedish, Dutch, Hebrew, Ukrainian, Turkish, Hindi, Hungarian, Uzbek, Kazakh, Polish, Czech, Urdu, Malay, Swahili, Javanese, Pashto, Tajik and Chinese). We also teach 8 classical and constructed languages, Latin, Ancient Greek, Old English, Sanskrit, Syriac Aramaic, Pahlavi, Classical Nahuatl and Esperanto.

    The Graduate Institute of Interpretation and Translation (GIIT) of SISU is awarded the highest ranking by AIIC, the International Association of Conference Interpreters, as the only Asian university among the 15 top professional conference interpreting schools in the world.

    Drawing on its strengths in multi-language programs and multi-disciplinary resources, while responding to national and regional strategies, SISU operates more than 80 research institutes and centers serving as academic think tanks to provide advisory services on language policies, diplomatic strategies and global public opinion of China. These academic entities have contributed landmark research and are also dedicated to promoting the development of social sciences in China.

    SISU has now established partnerships with more than 420 universities and institutions from 62 countries and regions, and have maintained close connection with international organizations, including the United Nations and the European Union.

    SISU has also compiled and published a series of Mandarin Chinese textbooks to be used by non-Chinese speakers as a means of further promoting cultural exchange between China and the rest of the world. Over the past five years, around 4,000 international students have been enrolled each year in SISU's Chinese language programs or other degree schemes and 9 Confucius Institutes have been established in Asia, Africa, Europe, North and South America.

    Over the past seven decades, SISU,s graduates have been contributing to the economic, cultural and social development of China and to the promotion of friendly exchange with people around the world.


Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence (CAAI)


    The Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence (CAAI) is the only state-level science and technology organization in the field of artificial intelligence under the Ministry of Civil Affairs.

    The CAAI has 40 branches, including 34 professional committees and six working committees, covering the fields of science and smart technology. CAAI is devoted to academic activities in science and technology in the People’s Republic of China. The organization’s goal is to unite science and technology professionals focused on artificial intelligence through academic research and exchange, science popularization, academic education, science and technology exhibition, academic publishing, talent recommendation, academic evaluation, academic advising, technology assessment activities, and other incentives.

    The CAAI is the sole organizer of a series of academic activities such as the Global Artificial Intelligence Technology Conference, the Chinese Congress on Artificial Intelligence, China Intelligence Industry Summit, “Huawei Cup” National College Student AI Design Contest, the University Computer Games Championship, the IEEE International Conference on Cloud Computing and Intelligence Systems, etc.. At the same time, the Society has established the National Intelligent Robot Innovation Alliance, which provides a platform for intelligent science and technology workers to display, exchange and integrate scientific research results, with a view to promoting intelligent science and technology.


School of Education at SISU (SoE)


    Founded in 2000, the School of Education (SoE) encourages students to study education from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. At present, the School is composed of four departments and one section, and offers four bachelor programs (Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Educational Technology, English Language Teaching and Business English); 一and three master programs (Educational Technology, Comparative and International Education, Curriculum and Instruction). SoE boasts a strong team of 53 professional teachers, all holding Master degrees and 38 holding PhD degrees. Among the twenty professors and associate professors, two are PhD supervisors and 18 are Supervisors of MA students. Equipped with international vision and academic learning experience in major western countries such as the U.K., U.S., Canada, Germany, Holland, and Switzerland, SoE teachers are highly qualified researchers, tutors, and English-Chinese bilingual lecturers in the fields of Education and English Language and Literature, as well as Chinese Language and Literature.


Bachelor's Programs

Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages

Department of TCSOL (Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages), previously known as Department of TCAFL (Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language) was founded in 1985. It is one of several long-standing composite degree programs in Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), which is also one of the four earliest universities in China to offer this undergraduate major.

Educational Technology

The B.S. program in Educational Technology is a comprehensive international program approved by the Ministry of Education in 1986. The goal of the program is to cultivate international compound talents with good ideological and moral qualities, solid knowledge of educational technology, performance analysis, curriculum development, and instructional teaching (training) design, educational resource development and management, as well as essential English language skills.

English Language Teaching

The B.A. program in English Language Teaching (ELT) is characterized by the integration of English language learning and educational studies. It emphasizes interdisciplinary teaching and research. By taking courses in both English language and literature and educational theories and practice, students are expected to achieve an advanced level of English proficiency, develop a solid foundation in liberal arts, and master various theories and skills regarding educational practice. Our graduates are excellent candidates for professions in the field of education and culture.

Business English

Approved by the Ministry of Education in 2009, the B.A. program in Business English at Shanghai International Studies University aims at training future business leaders with excellent English language skills and a holistic range of knowledge and skills in the fields of business and commerce. Students in the program are required to acquire not only solid intercultural communication skills, but also the necessary expertise in international business and the humanities. Graduates can satisfy the needs of government agencies, international organizations, multinational corporations, and other enterprises, and communicate effectively in business activities.

Master's Programs

Educational Technology

The program (since 1997) cultivates application-oriented talents and future researchers in the fields of educational technology and performance technology. It remains at a leading position nationwide in the following four research areas: performance technology and training, instructional design and development, technology-enhanced foreign language education, and new media for learning application. The teachers and students are responsible for the central research activities of the International Comparative Studies Center for ICT in Education and in charge of MOOC related duties. The two MOOCs “Intercultural Communication” and “Communicative Chinese”,launched on the FutureLearn platform, were produced by the ICT center and have exerted great international influence.

Curriculum and Instruction

The Curriculum and Instruction Program aims at training future researchers and educators in theories of curriculum, innovative teaching and evaluation, teachers, professional development, and students' learning with the goals of providing counselling, assisting in educational policy formation, and practicing teaching themselves. It serves the curriculum reform of both theory and practice across the whole country.


Comparative and International Education

The Master's Program in Comparative and International Education (CIE) provides a strong theoretical and empirical base for studying comparative and international education in a rapidly changing global context. The program enables students to learn the core concepts, scientific perspectives, and methodologies in comparative education. Through its training and research activities, students can develop a better understanding of the status quo and developmental trend of global education. Within the program, three specializations are offered: (1) area studies in comparative education, (2) international curriculum development and design, (3) globalization and international education. Upon completion of the program, graduates will be better prepared to work for professions of many types at international organizations, universities, research institutes, educational departments at governments, and other cultural and educational institutions.

Educational Research Centers

Center for Comparative Study of Global Education

The Center for Comparative Study of Global Education was founded at Shanghai International Studies University on April 23, 2019. At the same time, a strategic cooperation agreement was signed with the Education Management Information Center of the Ministry of Education. Led by the School of Education, the center integrates the multilingual education resources of SISU and organically combines education with languages to jointly cultivate professionals of “multilingual plus education” to carry out comparative education research. It aims to cultivate “multilingual + education” professionals, who will put into practice the mission, Serving the needs of our nation, to advance social progress, and to promote heart-to-heart communication between China and the rest of the world,” and contribute to China's education reform and development.

International Comparative Studies Center for ICT in Education

The International Comparative Studies Center for ICT in Education was founded on April 15, 2015. The Center is jointly established by the Education Management Information Center of the Ministry of Education and Shanghai International Studies University (SISU). The Vice President of SISU acts as the Director, and the Chief Editor of the Chinese Journal of ICT in Education and Dean of the School of Education, SISU, acts as the Deputy Directors.
